Learning With Maya is Transformational
I’ve never come across someone who explained Maqamat and Taqsim in such an understandable and approachable way — especially for non-musicians like Maya

Learning with her deeply enriched my own knowledge and I look forward to studying with Maya again in the future!

Maya truly has a rare gift — not only in her extraordinary musical talents, but in her remarkable ability to bring that knowledge to others in a way that’s not just accessible, but inspiring.

As a non-musician, I found her teaching profoundly impactful. She bridges the gap between music and the world of dance.

Learning from Maya isn’t just educational — it’s transformational.

Learning with Maya will transform your connection to Arabic music.
Maqamat were still something mysterious to me until Maya.

I wish I had her classes when I was a young dancer.

Maya’s teaching style is hands on practical and understandable.

Maya Youssef’s classes are treasures! I highly recommend them to dancers of all levels

Maya brings a fresh spirit to the teaching of maqam. Her visual metaphors, generosity with the details, and upbeat, playful encouraging realness will help you wrap your head around Arabic music.

If you are on the fence, consider that it would take you many years to amass the knowledge that you can get from her in a short time.

If you are serious about connecting deeper to the emotion of the songs you dance to, work with Maya.  It will pay off in your dance.

Maya Youssef’s classes are treasures! I highly recommend them to all dancers.

Whether you are brand new to Raqs Sharqi and find Arabic music intimidating, or you are an experienced dancer who have been dancing for decades, Maya has valuable knowledge to share.

Her clear and comprehensive method makes maqam feel accessible and you don’t need any prior music theory to benefit.

Maqamat were still something mysterious to me until Maya. Her workshops clarified a lot!

Maya’s teaching style resonated deeply with me because it was very practical and understandable. Maya also has a sparkling, charming personality and her classes are a lot of fun!

Learning with Maya will transform your connection to Arabic music.
Having studied Arabic music for a long time myself, I can say with confidence that Maya brings a fresh spirit to the teaching of maqam. Her visual metaphors, generosity with the details, and upbeat, playful encouraging realness will help you wrap your head around Arabic music.

If you have the chance, work with her. You'll be able to listen to Arabic music with greater awareness, so that you can detect the shifts in feeling between maqamat, and to better predict when the shifts will happen.

This is the emotional content of Arabic music. If you are on the fence, consider that it would take you many years to amass the knowledge that you can get from her in a short time. If you are serious about understanding in a deeper way the emotion of the songs you dance to, from the perspective of maqam, take as much as you can from the experience of working with Maya. It will pay off in your dance.

You Are Not Unmusical. You Were Never Taught How to Listen
So you take workshop after workshop, looking to connect deeper to the music. And what do you hear some version of
👉 “Just listen more.” (But no one tells you what to listen for!)
👉 “Taqsim is just improvisation.” (It’s not—it’s a clear emotional map.)
👉 “Follow the rhythm.” (But taqsim often has none.)
👉 “Just translate the lyrics.” (Except the emotion isn’t in the lyrics.)
👉 “Study Western music theory.” (But are you dancing to Bach and Mozart?)

You can feel the music intuitively. But no one gave you a dancer’s language for what you are hearing

And no one taught you the very source of Arabic music; Maqam

Maqam is not about memorising names.

Maqam is a cultural code for states of emotions.

And when you begin to hear that code, you begin to understand what the music is actually expressing and what it means to the people of the culture.

Dance is the music made visible.

When I watch you dance, I should be able to see the music in your body.

The shifts.
The emotion.
The tarab.

That is authentic musicality.

Not doing more.

When you understand maqam, you start trusting your ears and feeling at home inside the music.

That’s the depth people feel.

That’s when they say:

“You have an Arab soul.”

Meet Your Mentor: Maya Youssef
I’m the world’s leading Maqam & Taqsim mentor, an internationally celebrated and multi-award winning musician and composer — known by the BBC as the “Queen of the Qanun.”

I grew up in Damascus inside the sound world many dancers are trying to reach: Melodies that carry memory, tension, longing, celebration, and tarab long before a single word is translated.

Later, conservatory training and my Master’s in Ethnomusicology gave me language for what I had lived instinctively. But it was working with dancers that showed me the real gap: They did not need a musician’s lecture. They needed a way to hear the emotional architecture of the music through the body.

Along the way, I’ve been recognised as an Exceptional Talent by Arts Council England, performed on world stages, and shared my music across the globe.

I love helping dancers understand Arabic music more deeply.

That is why I created The Maqam Building Block System™ and adapted it for dancers: Not to turn dancers into musicians, but to give dancers access to the musical world their bodies are already trying to enter.

A bridge between what dancers feel and what they can begin to understand musically.

A bridge between emotion and structure.
A bridge between intuition and language.
A bridge between loving the music and actually knowing what is happening inside of it.

Whether you dance for joy or for the stage, if you’re ready to geek out on Arabic music and embody authentic musicality from the inside out — the kind that makes your dance unforgettable — I’d love to walk this journey with you.

Balady Taqsim Body Map Masterclass (Value £1000): You no longer have to default to freezing, over-dancing, or relying on choreography when the music opens up. You have an emotional and physical map for meeting balady taqsim in real time.

Hands Down The Best Investment in My Musicality
"Maqam for Dancers was simply the best value for my continued training hands down. Your program provided me with the confidence to take on advanced musicality on a whole other level.

Your sessions were welcoming and not intimidating.

Looking back to day one of the program, I see and feel the growth. More importantly, it's more than just Maqam intensive program. It's a tribe of supportive dancers, who are passionate about the culture. As cultural representatives, it's important we get this right. We carry the torch, and set the bar for professionalism in this dance. Thank you for all you do Maya. I wish more music artists were like you.

Maya Is The Only One Who Can Breakdown Maqam To Dancers

Maya has a special gift for explaining complex topics in a clear and approachable way. She weaves lightness and humor into her teaching, which makes even difficult material feel accessible and enjoyable.

Maqam for Dancers was the best gift I have ever given myself. I now have a much deeper understanding of how to listen to, interpret, and embody a piece of music.

I had previously tried to learn about maqam through books, but I always felt lost. Maya’s teaching is truly unique — her knowledge and her warm, generous way of teaching make learning feel possible and joyful. She made this beautiful and complex musical world feel open and welcoming to me.

“I wanted to be taken seriously as a dancer.”
I had heard about maqam for years, but I was often told it was only for musicians — that dancers didn’t really need to know it.

But as a performing artist, I wanted to understand what I was feeling. I wanted to know why the music moved me so much, even when there were no words.

I also wanted to be taken seriously — by my audience, by musicians, and by the communities whose music I love and dance to.

Since taking Maqam for Dancers, I feel like I bring more to the table as a dancer and performer. The more educated I am in the music, the more I can relax, stop overthinking, and express myself with more authenticity.'

I Feel At Home In The Music
Before working with Maya, I used to rush during a taqsim. Now I can hear where the music is going first and let it guide my dance. I feel at home in the music.

No, You Don’t Need to Read Music, Know Theory, or Be “Advanced.”

You won’t learn maqam through notation, scales, or academic theory. You’ll learn it through listening.

You don’t need musical training or years of experience.
You don’t need to arrive already confident or have figured it all out.
Your body is your instrument here and you just need the desire to deepen your connection to the music.

No, This Doesn’t Replace Immersion. It Deepens It And No The Great Dancers Could Not Name Maqam…

Many of the dancers we revere — from the Golden Age to icons or dancers like Soheir Zaki and Fifi Abdou — may never have sat down and formally studied maqam.

But they didn’t develop their musicality in isolation from it.

They lived and worked alongside musicians who carried the tradition. They were immersed, day after day, in maqam-based music until its language lived in their bodies.

They did not need to name every maqam to embody the music.

And that kind of immersion is irreplaceable.

The Maqam Building Block System™ doesn’t replace it. It gives you a map for it.

So instead of waiting decades for every musical insight to arrive through osmosis, you learn the signposts — what to listen for, what it means, and how to deepen what you’re already feeling.

No, this is not only for professional dancers.

You do not need to perform professionally to care about dancing with depth.

This is for the dancer who wants more than steps.

The lifelong lover of Arabic music.

The music nerd.

If you want to stop feeling like the melody is happening somewhere outside of you, and start feeling like you can meet it from within your body, you belong here.

Are you ready to...

Unlock a deeper level of artistic mastery
You have done it all.. rythm lyrics technique... you know maqam if the missing piece to your next level.

Hear the real emotion of the melody beyond rhythm or lyrics
So your dance doesn’t just match the music — it mirrors the inner story the music is telling.

Finally have language for what you’ve been feeling intuitively for years
This is where your intuition meets your intellect, giving you a deeper level of clarity, confidence, and connection.

Recognise moments of tarab in real time
So you can catch the emotional peaks in real time and let your body respond with depth, power, and authenticity.

Feel confident dancing to a taqsim without freezing, guessing, or waiting for the rythm to return
You’ll learn how to recognise where you are in the emotional arc, hear the cues musicians give, and meet the music instead of chasing it.

Feel confident dancing to live music, improvisation, and unfamiliar versions of songs
So even when something unexpected happens, or you dance with new musicians, you feel relaxed in your own knowing — trusting your ears, your body, and your ability to respond.

Make stronger musical choices as an artist
Whether you’re choosing a song, working with musicians, or editing a 12-minute piece into 4 minutes, you’ll know how to select the sections that carry the strongest emotional impact that make your dance shine.

Dance in a way that feels culturally connected, respectful, and authentic
Because authenticity isn’t about copying the surface — it’s about understanding the culture, hearing the musical language, and responding with your body in a way that feels respectful to the culture.

Ready to Become Unforgettable & To Dance With Depth and Presence?
Not because you added more tricks, more drama, or more choreography — but because you are finally inside the music.

The kind of dancing people feel in their bones.

The kind of dancing that makes someone say:

“You don’t just dance to Arabic music… you have an Arab soul.”

“I feel so at home in the music. I feel so at home in taqsim.”
' I can't believe that I now have the confidence to dance to a live taqsim. I couldn't have done it without you.'

Three Months From Now, You'll Have a Musical Skillset You Can Use That Will Change How You Dance Forever

This isn't knowledge that stays in your head. It changes what you hear — and therefore the choices you can make in your dance.

You hear a maqam shift → you recognise that the emotional world has changed → your expression and movement change with it.

A taqsim begins → instead of freezing, filling the space or waiting for the rhythm → you hear where you are in its journey and know when to allow space.

You hear the ending of a taqsim approaching → instead of being caught off guard → you meet the qafla with confidence and musical precision.

You hear a moment of tarab → instead of dancing straight through it → you recognise the emotional peak and give it the weight it deserves.

You choose, choreograph or edit music → instead of guessing → you hear its emotional architecture and make stronger artistic choices.

By the end of our journey, you'll have trained your ears to recognise the main maqamat, hear emotional shifts, map the journey of a dance piece, understand the stages and signposts of taqsim, recognise tarab in real time, and make more informed choices when performing, improvising, choreographing or editing your music.

Because so many of the answers dancers are searching for are already inside the music.

Maqam teaches you how to hear them.

Ready to learn authentic musicality from the inside out
In just three months, you’ll gain clarity that lasts a lifetime.

Is Maqam for Dancers For You?
This is for you if:
  • You’re a passionate Raqs Sharqi or belly dancer hobbyist, performer, music nerd dancer — who wants to connect deeply to Arabic music.
    • You’ve tried to learn maqam before, but it was taught like a musician’s theory lesson — leaving you overwhelmed, confused, and still unsure what to actually listen for when you dance.
    • You’re ready to stop second guessing your musicality and to start trusting what you hear — and trusting your body, and the emotional story you’re expressing.
    • You’re ready to finally understand, feel and embody Arabic music in a way that is immediately relevant to your dancing — without getting lost in dry theory or waiting decades for it to “click.”
    • You want to feel at home inside taqsim — relaxed, confident, and able to meet the music as it unfolds.
This is NOT for you if:
        • You’re looking for a dance technique or choreography class. This is a maqam- music-listening course for dancers — designed to train your ears, deepen your understanding, and help you know what to listen for.
          • You’re looking for a one-time quick download instead of a practice. This work asks you to listen, repeat, apply, and keep coming back until the music starts to live in your body.
            • You believe "just feeling it" is enough — and aren’t ready to discover the deeper language behind the music.
            • You want one-size-fits-all answers — but Arabic music is alive, quirky, and every Maqam has its own unique story.
            • You want to take this program to reteach the materials to your students.  Maqam itself is an ancient musical tradition, but my specific methodology and teaching frameworks require proper training to teach and are not licensed through this program.

From Intimidated by Maqam to Recognizing It by Ear in Seconds
"I always loved Arabic music but always found Maqam confusing and intimidating.

I didn’t think I would ever ‘get it’ — until I found Maya. Her method made everything click.

Within seconds I could recognize Maqam by ear… and — for the first time — really understand the flow of Taqsim. I could recognize exactly where I was inside the journey, instead of feeling lost..

            Something I never thought possible"

Imagine What’s Possible in Just Three Months

You step on stage. The melody shifts — and you feel it before it happens.

The taqsim begins, and instead of tensing up, you smile. You know exactly where you are in the music’s journey and where it’s leading next. You sense when a taqsim is about to end and meet the music with precision and powerful presence.

You intuitively recognize the maqam by ear like recognising the voice of a friend. You connect to the emotion of each melody and reflect it powerfully in your dance.

You’re no longer guessing. You’re listening — deeply. You feel the real emotion of the melody, beyond rhythm or lyrics. You anticipate the flow, move with it, and create the kind of performance your audience feels in their heart and soul.

When you edit your music, you do it with clarity and confidence — trimming a long piece into a short, emotionally charged story that keeps the full arc of tarab alive.

You move with confidence. With knowing. With soul.

You no longer follow the music — you become it.

And that's when you become unforgettable.

            Your Intuition Already Knows.
Now Give It a Map and Save Yourself Decades

You can be an incredible dancer and not consciously know a thing about maqam.

            Maybe you learned by immersion.
            By years of listening..
            And that wisdom is real.

Maqam for Dancers does not replace that. It deepens it — giving you language for what can otherwise take decades to understand consciously.

Because even after years of dancing with Arabic music, you may still wonder:

Why did the feeling just change?
            What creates tarab?
Why do Arab audiences respond so deeply to this sound?
How do I express what I feel when there are no lyrics or rythm to guide me?

This is where maqam becomes your map.

You learn to recognize the emotional architecture of the music, give language to what your body may already be sensing, and trust your response with more clarity.

So you’re not choosing between intuition and understanding.

            You’re bringing them together.

And that is where authentic musicality becomes embodied, confident, and alive.

Ready to Deepen Your Connection To The Music?

This isn’t another music theory course.
            It’s not a dance class.
It’s not a playlist of songs you’re supposed to “just feel.”

This is for the dancer who knows maqam is the missing link to their next level of artistry.

The dancer who wants to stop guessing and finally understand:

            What am I actually hearing?
What emotion is the melody carrying?
            Where is the music going?
How do I respond to taqsim without freezing?
How do I transmit tarab through my body?
How do I dance in a way that feels culturally connected, respectful, and alive?

That is exactly what this journey gives you.

Inside Maqam for Dancers, maqam stops being mysterious.

            Taqsim stops being intimidating.

Tarab stops being something you hope you magically enter.

You begin to hear the emotional architecture of Arabic music — and you learn how to bring it into your body, your choices, your presence, and your dance.

This is not about becoming a musician.

It is about becoming the kind of dancer who can hear the soul of the music and make it visible.

The dancer who can hear, feel, and embody Arabic music from the inside out — with confidence, depth, and soul, no matter how many times the melody shifts.

This is your moment to stop dancing on top of the music…

And start dancing from inside it.

So your audience doesn’t just see your performance.

They feel it in their bones.
